Earth Hour is almost upon us.
For those of you who don’t know what it is, Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by the WWF. It’s held every year and encourages people to turn off their non-essential lights, for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm.
This year, Earth Hour is taking place tomorrow (27/03).
So, in case you fancy joining us in taking part in this electrical ‘time out’, Community Utilities (part of the Amber Enterprises Group) and the UKAA have teamed up to list five activities you could get up to during Earth Hour.
- Work up a sweat
Depending on the space or how many candles you have stored away in a cupboard somewhere, you could do a home workout. Just don’t knock those candles over.
- Take in the sights
If it’s safe to do so, you could go for a walk – something we’d recommend if you live close to any of the iconic landmarks participating in Earth Hour.
- Get creative
What better time to unleash your inner artist and try your hand at painting in the dark? And, if you’re feeling particularly imaginative, you could try using some glow-in-the dark paint to light up your living room.
- Pick up a book
Do you have a book in your life that you’ve been neglecting for ages? Then relax in the candlelight, pour yourself a tasty beverage and give that book some overdue attention. But please make sure that the lighting is suitable because reading in poor light can lead to eye damage.
- Make a resolution
Today is as good a day as any to make a commitment to reduce your carbon footprint. Not quite sure how to manage it? Here’s a list of measures to inspire you into action.
While it only lasts for a short period of time, Earth Hour brings a huge amount of awareness to a cause Community Utilities and the UKAA are incredibly passionate about – safeguarding the environment for future generations.
Every action we take impacts life around us and these small actions at home can go some way to helping the planet.
So, turn off the lights tonight, and spend that hour doing something different or, even better, spend it enjoying some quality time with the friends, family or loved ones you live with.
